Charlotte Center for Literary Arts, Inc. (“Charlotte Lit”) proudly presents An Evening with Jessica Jacobs, as part of its first series of free Chapbook Lab poetry readings. Jessica will share new pieces from a soon to be published collection of essays and poems exploring spirituality, Torah and Midrash (Four Way Books, 2024).
After years of trying to leave organized religion in her past, Jacobs found herself drawn to the Jewish teachings of her youth. “What I loved most was the Midrash – interpretations and extrapolations of Torah written by rabbis in arguments and collaborations across geography and time – magnet for perspective and the deep wisdom I found there and how I felt invited to think alongside them and even add my voice to this endless conversation.
Recently, Jessica completed a five-year journey creating poetry responding to the Book of Genesis in relation to other ancient texts exploring how they speak to, inform and trouble our current world. Join Jessica for an evening of community and connection, as she explores these age-old questions: why am I here? What does it mean to be a good partner, a good person?
