Elaine Cynthia Brown gives a poetry reading at WHQR’s MC Erny Gallery

WHQR is pleased to announce that Elaine Cynthia Brown will be joining us for a poetry reading at WHQR’s MC Erny Gallery on Friday, August 25 at 6 p.m.

Elaine Cynthia Brown (aka) Poet E Spoken is a history teacher and freestyle spoken word artist whose work can be seen in countless anthologies including Black fire this time, Joshua’s Tree, Colossus Home, Inflection, Black Rootedness and Funny Money.

Elaine is a descendant of Joshua Halsey, one of the victims of the 1898 Wilmington massacre. As the youngest granddaughter of Juanita Starks, the granddaughter of Sally and Joshua Halsey who was raised by Sally, she has had the privilege of hearing the stories of his family. In 2016, his mother Joan Starks lost all of her siblings. Elaine wanted to honor her ancestors and elders, especially her mother, so she wrote shouted with laughter, a book detailing the lives of Joshua’s descendants. She wrote “Joshua’s Tree” for Joshua Halsey’s memorial service at Pine Forest Cemetery in November 2021 and will return to Wilmington for her grandmother Juanita’s heavenly birthday in late August.

This is a family event, free and open to the public, but as space is limited, we ask that you please RSVP with your name and the number of people in your group. to [email protected]
