Poet and award-winning playwright John Macker


Award-winning poet and playwright John Macker will read excerpts from his recent collection of poems, Late Matins, 5 p.m., Sunday, September 25, at Teatro Paraguas, 3205 Calle Marie in Santa F.

John Macker grew up in Colorado and has lived in northern New Mexico for 25 years. He has published 14 complete books and collections of poetry, 2 audio recordings, an anthology of fiction and essays, and several leaflets on 35 years.

His most recent are Late Mornings, Atlas of Wolves, The Blues Drink Your Dreams Away, Selected Poems 1983-2018, (un 2019 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards finalist) and Desert Threnody, essays and short fiction films, (winner of the 2021 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards Fiction Anthology Prize). For many years, he contributed to the Albuquerque Malpais Review. His one-act play, “Coyote Acid” was produced by Teatro Paraguas in Santa Fe in early 2022. He just completed a trilogy of in one act entitled “The Black Range”. He lives in Santa Fe with his wife Annie and two dogs.

In this short and focused collection of poems, Macker pays homage to ancient poets, explores bad politics on the solstice, celebrates the books, the San Luis Valley in Colorado, the butterflies of Whitman’s beard and firmly places his poetic practice in the idea that each morning is resolutely unique and should belong to the “sweet hours”.
